Kenya has launched its first online university, which is called the National Open University of Kenya (OUK). The university which is located in Nairobi will offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, as well as short courses.
Open University of Kenya (OUK).
The
Open University will provide flexibility in the time and place for learning and
allow students to access university education at their convenience by use of
modern technology. This will ease the pressure exerted on physical facilities
in universities and remove the rigidity in terms of need to attend classes at
fixed places and within a specific time frame. More so the model assures
uniformity in programs allowing many students to pursue standardized quality
programs. The need for the National Open University in Kenya provides an
investment opportunity in infrastructure development and provision of
equipment.
The
OUK is targeting a wide range of students, including the youth, the elderly,
people with disabilities, minorities, and marginalized groups. The university’s
flexible learning methods will make it possible for these students to access
high-quality education, regardless of their location or circumstances.
The
OUK is a public university, and its tuition fees are relatively affordable.
Modules start at a cost of Sh10, 400 and Sh10, 900, and postgraduate diploma
courses cost Sh130, 000 per year. Full-time students are expected to take
between 4 and 6 modules.
The OUK’s open and distance e-learning approach will make it possible for students from all over Africa to access high-quality education. This is especially important for students who live in rural areas or who have other barriers to accessing traditional higher education.
